Our Various Types of Quinoa

An inviting shade of maroon that darkens when cooked, Red Quinoa profiles with an earthy flavor and pleasing chew that makes it particularly well suited to pair with other fresh ingredients in cold salads. THE CHEF’S
NOTES

Quinoa has become a trendy grain du jour in culinary circles. But while the grain (actually a gluten-free seed) does boast robust nutritional qualities, its humble reputation undersells its versatility. Its striking visual vibrancy, subtle flavor profile, and delightful texture offer immense potential for culinary creativity and surprising flavors.

Explore the above recipes to unlock the considerable tastes the “mother” grain has to offer. You may surprise yourself.

QUINOA
FAQs

Quinoa is technically not a grain but a gluten-free seed; it’s used, however, in the same way as other whole grains. It’s also called a pseudo-cereal in that it’s grain-like but actually not a grass-like wheat.

Because of its neutral flavor and easy preparation, there are limitless culinary possibilities for Quinoa. Take a look at our recipes if you’re seeking some inspiration.

Preparing quinoa is simple and straightforward: add 1 part of your preferred RiceSelect® quinoa to 2 parts liquid (water or chicken broth). Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 15 minutes. Our Quinoa comes pre-washed, so there’s no need to rinse. If you’re looking to create a special dish, check out our recipe section.

Add 1 part quinoa to 2 parts liquid in a rice cooker. Cover and set on the “quinoa” setting. If there’s no “quinoa” setting on your rice cooker, you’ll have to set it to “white rice” and monitor closely until all of the water has been absorbed.

If you want more flavorful quinoa, add chicken broth or another flavorful liquid to customize your taste.

Quinoa is a superfood/supergrain and is a complete source of protein (inclusive of the nine essential amino acids). For perspective, a single cup of quinoa has around 8 grams of protein. It’s also an excellent source of fiber (5g).

Great question! Cooked quinoa lasts approximately 3-5 days when refrigerated.

Once prepared, Quinoa can be stored in the refrigerator and reheated via stovetop or microwave. Prepared Quinoa can also be stored in the freezer and will keep for 8-12 months, if vacuum sealed.

Yes, there are three different color varieties of Quinoa, all surprisingly decadent. White quinoa is lighter and fluffier, the most delicate in flavor of any variety. This makes it ideal for adding to baked goods. Alternatively, red quinoa and black quinoa have a hearty, slightly chewier texture, which gives it somewhat of a nuttier, richer flavor. Red and black quinoa make for a pleasant addition to cold salads. Tri-Color Quinoa features all three color varieties, unlocking even more decadent possibilities.

All RiceSelect Quinoa varieties are Certified Gluten Free.
