Instructions

  1. Combine chicken broth and salt in saucepan; bring to a boil. Add couscous, cover and remove from heat. Allow to stand 5 minutes.

  2. In a large bowl, combine couscous and the rest of the ingredients (except for avocados), mixing until well combined.

  3. Scoop out half of each avocado half and fill with couscous mixture.

  4. Serves 6.

What is Basil?

Basil, a member of the mint family of herbs, is a crucial ingredient in Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. It is a prominent component of classic pesto and a preferred flavoring in tomato-based pasta sauces. But other kinds of cuisine, like Thai, Indonesian, and Vietnamese, also incorporate basil.

There are more than 60 different types of basil, each with a special flavor. The most well-known and frequently used kind is sweet basil, although many Asian dishes also call for Thai basil, which is distinguished by a strong anise flavor.

What Does Basil Taste Like?

Sweet basil has a flavor that is peppery with hints of mint and a sweet, fragrant aroma. Bigger leaves offer a stronger flavor and a tad bit of heat. The kind of basil will determine its flavor and strength. Some kinds might have citrus or other spice undertones. Thai basil has a strong licorice flavor and is more flavorful.

Substituting Dry Basil for Fresh Basil

In some recipes, especially those that call for cooked ingredients, dried basil can be used in place of fresh. But, keep in mind that dried basil does not quite taste like fresh basil; the dehydration process can increase the amount of mintiness.

Substitutes

When needing to substitute for dried basil, oregano, tarragon, thyme, and savory may work in your recipe. Spinach leaves or celery leaf can be used in place of basil in some fresh dishes like pesto, and caprese salad. Italian herb seasoning (a mix of dried parsley, thyme, oregano, rosemary) can be subbed in for dried basil in sauces. Oregano and thyme are also popular in Mediterranean cooking so are often compatible in dishes that feature basil, both fresh or dried.
