What is Jackfruit?

An ancient fruit called jackfruit is produced on trees in tropical regions. It is a staple throughout south and southeast Asia, particularly Bangladesh, Thailand, and India. Jackfruit has been utilized as food and medicine for hundreds of years, despite being relatively new to North America. In addition to being high in antioxidants, it is thought to possess antibacterial and antifungal qualities.

Jackfruit has a thick, rough covering and large, stringy pods inside. These pods taste sweet and banana-like when they are mature. Nonetheless, the fruit is often underripe and a little firmer when used for savory meals, giving it a meatier texture.

What does Jackfruit Taste Like?

Underripe jackfruit has an extremely weak flavor. It is frequently used as a substitute for pulled pig or chicken because of its neutral flavor, which typically goes well with more savory recipes. The starchy fruit can be marinated or used to make tasty sauces once it has been cut or shred. Although jackfruit has a strong flavor, a firm texture, and is a good sauce absorber, no one will be fooled into believing it is meat.

On the other hand, ripe jackfruit has a sweet flavor. The flavor is comparable to that of other tropical fruits like mango or pineapple, and it tastes fantastic in smoothies.

How to Prepare Jackfruit

Start by halving the jackfruit and using your hands to scoop out the seeds and pods. You can consume the jackfruit's pods either raw or cooked. Consider cooking them in a pan or putting them in a slow cooker with a zesty sauce. The jackfruit's interior can become somewhat sticky, so wearing gloves may be beneficial.
