Where Does Jasmine Rice Come from?

Jasmine rice hails from Southeast Asia where it is primarily harvested in Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia. Named after the jasmine flower due to its similar color tone, this long grain rice variety is famous for its floral tasting notes and fragrant aroma. A versatile ingredient, it’s suitable for use in soups, stir-fry recipes, side dishes, and a variety of Thai curry dishes. What’s more, its sweetness makes it the perfect base for a whole host of rice dessert recipes.

Cooking Jasmine Rice – Do’s and Don’ts

DO DON'T
  1. Rinse the Rice
    • If you prefer, rinse Jasmine rice 2-3 times to remove surface starch. This will help prevent stickiness.

  1. Don’t Soak Jasmine Rice
    • Soaking is not necessary for jasmine rice, as it can result in soft or mushy rice.

  1. Use the Right Water Ratio
    • For stovetop cooking, the typical ratio is 1 cup of rice to 1.25 cups of water. You can adjust this ratio based on how you would like your rice to come out. Using slightly less water makes for firmer rice.

  1. Don’t Skip Rinsing
    • If you would prefer a less sticky consistency, don't fail to rinse Jasmine rice, as it could be overly starchy.

  1. Let It Rest After Cooking
    • Allow the rice to sit covered for 5-10 minutes after cooking. This allows the steam to settle and the grains to cook evenly.

  1. Don’t Stir While Cooking
    • Stirring disrupts the grains and can make the rice mushy.

  1. Use a Tight Lid
    • Cook Jasmine rice with a tightly-fitted lid to trap steam for even cooking.

  1. Don’t Use Excess Water
    • Adding too much water can lead to mushy or overcooked rice. Stick to the recommended water-to-rice ratio.

  1. Cook on Low Heat
    • After bringing the water to a boil, reduce the heat to simmer for the remainder of the cooking process.

  1. Don’t Lift the Lid Frequently
    • Avoid opening the lid during cooking, as it lets out steam needed for evenly cooked grains.

  1. Fluff with a Fork
    • Use a fork to gently separate the grains after resting to avoid clumping.

  1. Don’t Use High Heat
    • Cooking Jasmine rice on high heat can lead to uneven cooking and burnt rice at the bottom of the pot.

  1. Consider Using a Rice Cooker
    • Jasmine rice cooks well in rice cookers, as they ensure consistent results with minimal effort.

  1. Don’t Overcook
    • Overcooking breaks the grains and ruins the soft, delicate texture of jasmine rice.

  1. Measure Accurately
    • Use precise measurements for rice and water to ensure consistent texture and flavor.

  1. Don’t Leave Cooked Rice in the Pot for Too Long
    • Leaving rice in a hot pot after cooking can make it sticky and overcooked. Transfer to a serving dish or fluff it once it’s ready.

Frequently Asked Questions about Jasmine Rice

Is Jasmine Rice considered long grain or short grain?

Jasmine rice is a long grain rice variety that takes on a fluffy texture when cooked, similar to that of Basmati rice, but with a plumper, fuller consistency. Long grain rice varieties like Jasmine can work wonders in a wide variety of recipes, from soups, salads, and casseroles, to curries, pilafs, and desserts.

Is Jasmine Rice whole grain?

As is the case with many rice varieties, this depends on the type of Jasmine rice you’re cooking with. White jasmine rice has the bran and germ removed during the harvesting process and is therefore not considered whole grain. Brown Jasmine rice, on the other hand, retains the bran and germ and in that sense is similar to any other whole grain rice variety in terms of nutritional value.

Is Jasmine Rice good for you?

Jasmine rice is a staple food of many cuisines around the world and with good reason. Thai Jasmine rice is rich in nutrients and fiber and has many benefits when consumed as part of a balanced and healthy diet.

Is Jasmine Rice gluten-free?

The simple answer is: yes, it is. As people become more and more educated on the topic of gluten intolerance, it’s important to know what foods are suitable for those suffering from celiac disease. Jasmine rice does not contain gluten and is a viable option for those wishing to eliminate, or simply cut down on, their gluten intake.

How to store Jasmine Rice after cooking?

Cooked Jasmine rice can be kept in the refrigerator and consumed within 4-6 days. Always leave to cool before refrigerating. It can also be frozen and consumed within 6 months.
