Although the term “nasi goreng” means fried rice in the Indonesian and Malaysian language, this recipe has taken the classic recipe technique and replaced the rice with a protein-packed blend of RiceSelect® Tri-Color Quinoa. Using a blend of three different quinoa varieties, each serving contains 6g of protein, 5g of fiber, 2mg of iron, and 300mg of potassium.
Sauce: Unlike traditional Chinese fried rice recipes, this dish uses a blend of sauces for perfectly balanced flavor including soy sauce, ketchup, sambal oelek, oyster sauce, rice wine vinegar and sugar. Sambal oelek, a chili sauce or paste, is typically made from a mixture of a variety of chili peppers for a spicy kick. Oyster sauce along with ketchup add a layer of umami flavor, while the sugar adds sweetness, rice wine vinegar acid, and soy sauce a salty touch.
Vegetables: When it comes to vegetables, this recipe incorporates a wide variety including broccolini, carrots, red pepper, shallots, bok choy, snow peas and green onions which are quite common in Indonesian cooking. This recipe is also versatile, so other varieties can be substituted in, if desired.
Spices: For extra flavor, the quinoa is added with garlic, ginger and curry powder to sautée everything together.
Eggs: In this recipe, the eggs are stir-fried with the other ingredients, however certain varieties fry or scramble eggs and place them on top. Use this recipe as inspiration to create your own version to serve how you prefer.
