  1. In a medium saucepan, prepare rice according to package instructions.

  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, add vegetable oil. Once warmed, add garlic and cook until golden and crisp, about 5 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to place garlic on a paper towel-lined plate.

  3. In the same skillet, add ginger, carrot, bell pepper and white onion. Cook 5-7 minutes, until tender. Add peas and tamari. Push vegetables to the edges of pan and pour eggs into the empty section of skillet. Once edges of egg start to cook, use a spatula to pull edges to the center. Repeat movement until eggs are completely cooked, about 3-5 minutes.

Making Fried Rice

Fried rice is one of the best recipes for experimenting with ingredients, flavors and textures. When you learn the essentials to make it at home, the meal possibilities are endless.

While many recipes are made with classic Chinese ingredients like sesame oil, soy sauce and green onion, fried rice is actually a common meal served throughout Asia in Thailand, China, Japan, Indonesia and other countries. In fact, this recipe uses tamari, which is a Japanese soy sauce. While each country has its own variety, one similarity rings true — it’s a dish made using leftovers such as eggs, veggies, meats and seafood.

Try it for yourself in this dish of Japanese-style Fried Rice and Japanese Omelet using aromatic rice stir-fried with vegetables served with an egg omelet. Or, try an Indonesian-style Nasi Goreng with chicken and tri-color quinoa in place of rice.

Fried Rice Tips

The biggest tip we can offer for making amazing fried rice is to use the right rice variety in order to obtain that perfect texture. We suggest long grain rice such as our aromatic Texmati® White Rice which cooks up fluffy and separate. In contrast, short grains and medium grains cook up more compact, making them perfect for sushi or creamier dishes like rice risotto, respectively. However, long grains cook up separately, which ensures that the grains are stir-fried evenly.

Follow these tips to really make your fried rice dish amazing.

  • Use day-old rice. Cooking rice the day before, or using leftover rice, gives it enough time to settle and absorb any excess liquid. This helps to avoid a mushy fried rice meal.
  • For best results, use a large pan, skillet or wok that is heated thoroughly. When making stir-fries and fried rice, you’ll notice that many times vegetable or canola oil is used to cook the vegetables. This is because it has a higher smoke point and can tolerate more heat while still cooking the vegetables.
  • Use your sauce sparingly for flavor. If you add too much sauce it might lead to mushier rice results.
