What is Saffron?

A delicacy and precious commodity, saffron has a unique flavor and distinct red color that can elevate a dish in an instant. This spice has a floral and slightly bitter flavor that adds a beautiful depth and complexity in many Middle Eastern, Indian, and Mediterranean dishes. One of the most expensive spices in the world due to its prized aroma and difficult harvesting process, you should use saffron very sparingly in your dishes.

Different Forms of Saffron

There a few forms that you can buy saffron in, each varying in potency and price level.

  • Saffron Threads: The most common and expensive form of this spice, the threads are the stigma of the saffron flower. Each thread has a deep red color and cooks with a unique floral aroma.

  • Saffron Strands: Shorter than the threads, strands are sold in smaller quantities and are often less expensive, but also less potent.

  • Saffron Powder: made from grounded saffron threads, this fine powder is a more convenient form of the spice that can dissolve easier in liquids
